Some photos released today by the US Navy claimed to show its USS Sirocco patrolman seizing drugs from an Iranian fishing boat in the Gulf of Oman, from which five sailors on board had escaped.
“Navy personnel rescued five sailors on December 15, 2021 after a fire caused an explosion in their boat. “The boat was transporting illegal drugs to the Gulf of Oman,” the US Navy said in a statement.
“The sailors of our patrol Sirocco rescued five injured sailors but another of them is reported missing.”
Marina said the five sailors identified themselves as Iranians and were transported to Oman by helicopter for medical treatment and later for repatriation.
“The sailors were seen spilling liquid on their cargo before the vehicle caught fire and exploded,” said U.S. Navy spokesman Tim Hawkins.
The statement added that several tons of millions of dollars worth of drugs were seized.
According to officials, the charge included 1,745 kilograms of marijuana, 500 kilograms of methamphetamine and 30 kilograms of heroin.
The Sirocco warship is part of the US force in Bahraini waters.
