The UN Security Council convened in New York after Britain and several other countries demanded an urgent meeting following the Russian bombing of a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which is currently under Russian control.
The buildings of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the largest in Europe, have been damaged and Ukrainian authorities have stated that there have been casualties and injuries.
The US representative, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said at the meeting that Russia’s actions were “reckless” and “dangerous”.
“By the will of God, yesterday evening the world managed to avoid a nuclear catastrophe. We were holding our breath as we watched the horrific situation unfold in real time“, She said.
Greenfield said Russian forces were 32 kilometers away from another nuclear facility and that the “danger” continued.
