Russia reacted sharply on Saturday to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s comment that Kazakhstan may find it difficult to withdraw Russian troops.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that instead of making such statements, Mr. Blinken should reflect on US military intervention worldwide.
Mr Blinken on Friday challenged Russia’s argument for sending troops to Kazakhstan following days of violent unrest in the Central Asian country. “History teaches us that when Russians enter a country, sometimes it is very difficult to force them to leave,” Mr Blinken said.
Russia’s foreign ministry called his comments “offensive” and said Washington should analyze its history of interventions in countries such as Vietnam and Iraq. The ministry said sending troops to Kazakhstan was a legitimate response to Kazakhstan’s request for support from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, an alliance of former Soviet states that includes Russia.
The intervention in Kazakhstan comes at a time of high tensions in Moscow’s relations with Washington as the two countries prepare for talks on the Ukraine crisis starting Monday. Moscow has deployed a large number of troops near its border with Ukraine, but denies planning a military intervention./VOA
