Albania seems to have welcomed the decision of the US Treasury Department, which imposed new sanctions on Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik.
Through a note on Twitter, Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka says that Albania strongly supports the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and strongly opposes any attempt to undermine it and threaten peace and stability in the Western Balkans.
“We welcome the definitions set by OFAC. Albania strongly supports the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and strongly opposes any attempt to undermine it and threaten peace and stability in the Western Balkans. “The future of our region lies in cooperation and integration, away from the politics of division and conflict.”, writes Olta Xhaçka.
The United States on Wednesday imposed new sanctions on Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, citing “corrupt activities” and “constant threats to the stability and territorial integrity” of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The US Treasury Department also designated an entity affiliated with it, Alternativna Television, based in Banja Luka.
“Dodik has undermined the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, calling for the acquisition of state powers and setting in motion the creation of parallel institutions in the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the Treasury Department said in a statement.
According to the announcement, he has used his official position to amass personal wealth through bribes, and other forms of corruption.
“His divisive ethno-nationalist rhetoric reflects his efforts to advance these political goals and to divert attention from his corrupt activities. “Taken together, these actions threaten the stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and undermine the Dayton Peace Accords, thus jeopardizing the wider regional stability,” the Treasury Department said.
