The United States has said it will sanction seven members of the Russian government in response to the poisoning and imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Washington said on March 2 that it would impose export restrictions on nine commercial entities inside Russia, which are involved in biological and chemical research.
A senior US official said in a statement that the United States had fallen short and “strongly believes” that Russian officials were behind Navalny’s poisoning in August.
The United States has said it will release the names of seven individuals later in the day.
According to a US official, the United States will respond in the coming weeks to “a number of destabilizing actions” by Russia, including hacking into software company Solar Winds and rewards for killing Americans in Afghanistan.
Navalny, 44, the leader of the anti-corruption movement and the biggest critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was arrested on January 17 after returning from Germany, where he was treated for five months for poisoning with a nerve agent.
He believes the poisoning order was given by Putin.
Russian authorities, on the other hand, deny the allegations.
