US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement today blamed the Russian occupation of Ukraine that the number of people suffering from food shortages has increased by adding about 40 million people recently.
“The lack of food base started at the beginning of the war but has now increased even more. “It has been dramatically exacerbated by Russian aggression against Ukraine, adding another 40 million people to those with food shortages.” said Blinken in comments before a meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister Bhutto Zardari.
“We are coming together… to see the concrete steps we can take to address food insecurity issues, to help people in need around the world.” said Blinken.
The Biden administration is working closely with European allies in an effort to pave the way for Ukrainian wheat and corn to be exported after Russia blocked Ukrainian ships from launching grain that is vital to food supplies around the world, particularly in Africa and the Middle East.
The challenge is a major focus for Blinken as he convenes a ministerial meeting on food safety and chairs a discussion on the issue at the United Nations in New York on Wednesday and Thursday, diplomats said.
