The US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, expects Serbia to impose sanctions on Russia immediately after the formation of the government.
He made it clear to the Serbian authorities how long the excuses for not making a final decision on sanctions against Russia will be tolerated. According to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, this could happen in late July.
Serbia, an EU candidate country, has not imposed sanctions on Russia for launching aggression in Ukraine. Official Belgrade justifies such an attitude by “protecting the vital interests of the country” and is also justified by the lack of institutions.
In an online speech at the Democracy Summit in Southeast Europe, Escobar expressed hope that Serbia would join other Western Balkan countries and impose sanctions on Russia once the new government is formed.
“Almost all the countries of the Western Balkans have agreed in some way to make Russia pay the price for it (occupation) through sanctions, through support for Ukraine and its people. “I hope that Serbia will join that group and that it will harmonize with the sanctions when it forms the government,” said Escobar.
