The US State Department, in response to statements by Serbian Minister Aleksandar Vullin, said that “the atrocities that took place in Recak in January 1999, including the massacre of civilians, are well documented.”
“Denying these basic facts and glorifying war crimes brings pain to survivors, dishonors victims, and keeps alive divisions that continue to hamper lasting reconciliation, peace, and prosperity for the Western Balkans.“, Says the statement of the US State Department given to Radio Free Europe.
Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vullin declared on December 10 that the Recak Massacre was a “big lie and a terrible forgery”.
“NATO aggression began after a terrible lie about Recak. At that time, we were neither capable nor smart enough to tell the whole world what a terrible lie it was“, Is quoted as saying Vullin.
On January 15, 1999, Serb police and military forces in Kosovo killed 45 Albanian civilians in the village of Recak in the municipality of Shtime.
The crimes committed in this village were documented by the then head of the observation mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, William Walker.
The Recak event was followed by NATO bombing of Serb targets in Kosovo as well as in Serbia.
Vullin has denied the Recak Massacre several times in the past, calling it a “fabricated crime.”
