The Omikron BA.5 variant is softer than its predecessors but more sticky. Pharmaceutical companies are continuing the search for vaccines against this variant, but apparently the masks will be back in the fall.
The Omicron variant of the corona virus is spreading rapidly. Given the new infections experts are warning of a potentially very high number of infections during the summer, i.e. at that time of year when the virus should not actually have spread so quickly.
In Germany the number of infected people doubles every week, while in Portugal the situation is even more dramatic. The number of patients hospitalized with crowns and the number of deaths from the disease has increased again.
Ineffective vaccines
Vaccines to date do not appear to be effective against the new subtypes, and even those already infected with the Omikron variant may not be immune to the new subtypes. It is therefore thought that people who had been infected with the omicron variant BA.1 at the beginning of the year could be re-infected with the BA.4 or BA.5 subtype.
Of the new subtypes of the Omikron variant, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk.
Pharmaceutical firms are working to modify vaccines to adapt to newer variants, but developing specific vaccines for the Onikron variant takes a long time.
Return to masks and physical distance
Experts are again discussing the application of preventive measures implemented during previous waves of pandemicism: closing schools, canceling public events, limiting the number of people at parties and private meetings, working from home, physical distance and wearing medical masks.
In many places they have caused a lot of discontent and even protests, so these measures have been lifted. But maybe they will come into force again in the fall./DW
