Tirana farmers will be relieved of the barriers set up for the sale of their products by private individuals. The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, present at the conference “Women in rural development”, stated that the food market monopoly will end with the largest public shopping center, which will be created in the Lundra area, where all farmers can sell their products.

“With the Ministry of Agriculture and ARDA, we have long been planning a food market without barriers. Today we are in a monopolistic situation in Tirana, as in Kashar there is a private market, which has set up a barrier, where it does not matter if it brings cabbage or strawberries, but pays for the coffers a tax that translates into costs for farmers, but also for the end user at the bread table. This monopoly must end. This is the reason why next to the shopping center in the Lundra area we are building the largest public food market, to ensure that the farmers of the crown of Tirana have a market without barriers “, said Veliaj.

For this, he said that the municipality has taken the models of large Italian agri-food centers, which also serve to promote the products of farmers, both those who cultivate little and those who produce in bulk.

“I want to end this year by breaking the monopoly. First, we will have to set the rules in the market. To break these barriers for producers and then start encouraging them to produce more and to be affirmed even more “, said Veliaj. He also said that production and food security have become global challenges today.

“Many of the headaches that have now started for the European leadership: where will the wheat come from, where will the corn come from, where will the grains come from, did not exist three months ago. Today, all of a sudden, many of the things we took for granted are returning to the topic of discussion. Today that Albania takes over the leadership of the UN Security Council, the Prime Minister is in New York for this work, all of a sudden one of the topics on the agenda, in addition to the war and its ban, is that of food security. “Sessions are being held on how the world will be fed in this new reality,” he said.

Highlighting investments in agritourism, Veliaj said that this is the best moment for Tirana. “It is enough to make a trip only in the Erzeni Valley, starting from Krraba, Iba, continuing down to Mullet, Petrela, then following the whole river in Baldushk, Vaqarr, Ndroq, until it leaves the territory of Tirana, for see how much fertile land and how much investment has been made in greenhouses. Today we have an extraordinary incentive, especially for agritourism and inns. “Finally, we have the most serious effort in our entire region to break the monopoly of a private market, which turns from encouraging to inhibiting entrepreneurship, so this is a good moment for Tirana.”

Veliaj closed his speech by saying that the capital produces today about half of the national GDP. “Today we are in a situation where, according to the latest statistics of INSTAT and the Bank of Albania, the economy of Tirana is as large as the whole of Albania in 2006. So, only one city in 61 municipalities produces all the economy that our country produced in 2006 Today we are over 48% of the country’s GDP. This means that, if this works well in Tirana, it has practically worked well for half of the country, or for half of the country’s economy, “concluded Veliaj.
