While President Biden is holding intensive diplomatic meetings in Europe, attending NATO, G-7 and European Union meetings in Brussels, former NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow says transatlantic unity with the war in Ukraine is a strong message for Moscow.
President Biden on Friday visited a refugee center in Poland, not far from the border with Ukraine. Poland has become a center of the West’s humanitarian and military response to the war in Ukraine.
The deployment of additional troops from Washington on NATO’s eastern flank has led to over 100,000 US troops stationed in Europe.
President Biden met with U.S. troops from the 82nd Division, which is part of the 10,500 U.S. troops stationed in Poland.
“In the last 10 years, more countries have moved away from democratic standards. So you are engaged in much more than just relieving the pain and suffering of the people of Ukraine. We are in a new phase. “Your generation, we are at a turning point.”
President Biden met with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, at a humanitarian aid distribution center. Washington has pledged an additional $ 1 billion in humanitarian aid. The US president again accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of war crimes.
“The most important thing we can do from the beginning is to keep democracies united in our efforts to limit the damage that the man I think is a war criminal is doing.” he said.
Earlier on Friday in Brussels, Mr Biden met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Europe currently pays Russia about $ 600 million a day for energy imports, a notable flaw in Western efforts to impose sanctions on Russia’s economy.
The United States plans to help efforts to end this dependence through a new agreement to increase liquefied natural gas imports to Europe to 50 billion cubic meters per year.
“This amount of 50 billion cubic meters per year will replace one third of Russian gas imported today from Europe.” said the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The Russian attack on Ukraine has transformed the security landscape in Europe. At the heart of President Biden’s visit is the message of transatlantic unity.
“The political message of unity between the Western countries that support Ukraine and solidarity with the Ukrainian people and government has sent a very important message to the Ukrainian people who are suffering from the war. “This has sent a message to Moscow that its hopes of dividing the West continue to be in vain.” said former NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow./VOA
