Lysychansku is one of the war-torn cities in Ukraine, which fell to Russian forces on Sunday.
Taking the city allowed Kremlin troops to take over the entire Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine, killing many on both sides.
Like Lysychansk, the similar city of Severodonetsk has been reduced to ruins by relentless Russian bombing.
Russia’s victory in Ukraine’s eastern province of Luhansk has brought little strategic benefit to Kremlin troops and “the main battle of the war is yet to come,” said Neil Melvin of the UK’s Services Institute.
“I think it’s a tactical victory for Russia, but at a great cost. This has taken 60 days to make very slow progress. I think the Russians can claim some sort of victory, but the main battle of the war is still ahead.”he said.
The military expert said the decisive battle for Ukraine is likely to take place not in the east, where Russia is launching its main offensive, but in the south, where Ukraine has launched a counteroffensive to retake territory.
“This is where we see the Ukrainians making progress around Kherson.” he added.
“There are counterattacks starting there, and I think it’s very likely that we’ll see momentum move toward Ukraine as it tries to build a large-scale counteroffensive to push the Russians back.“
