The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office has filed four charges against 34 people arrested on suspicion of being perpetrators of the violence that took place on January 8 in a protest called by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha in front of the Democratic Party headquarters.
In a press release, the prosecution clarifies that all necessary actions are being taken in terms of individualizing the actions performed by each of the arrested persons and other persons involved in actions contrary to the law.
They are charged with criminal offenses, such as “Destruction of property” under Article 150 of the Criminal Code, “Disturbance of public order” under Article 274 of the Criminal Code, “Violation of the rules on explosives, incendiary and radioactive substances” under Article 282 of the Criminal Code, “Illegal possession and production of weapons, explosive weapons and ammunition” according to Article 278 of the Criminal Code and “Unauthorized production, possession, purchase or sale of cold steel” under Article 279 of the Criminal Code.
The prosecution has set up several investigation tracks in connection with this event; such as the violence exercised by the protesters in the direction of the PD headquarters and the consequences such as destruction of property, the use of unknown materials in the direction of the protesters before the police intervention and the violence exercised in their direction, the possession of various items. illegalization and individualization of the authors, as well as any other data alleged up to this stage.
It is learned that investigations are continuing intensively, while it is reported that work is being done to seize the film footage and interrogate all persons who are aware of the event.
The Prosecution emphasizes that it is maximally committed to conducting investigations with objectivity as in any case, in order to fully clarify the circumstances of the event and bring to justice any person who has committed actions contrary to law.
On Saturday, several hundred supporters of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha attacked the Democratic Party headquarters.
They were well-organized, with hinges, ladders, levers, hammers, drills, and other tools with the sole purpose of obtaining the PD sled from the Re-establishment Commission.
It took the intervention of the police to bring the situation under control in a few minutes, as the lives of the deputies inside the headquarters, as well as the leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, were seriously endangered.
There were also some injured from the protest, but their number is still unknown.
Berisha’s supporters dispersed quickly and police units took control of the DP building, lined up in large numbers at its entrance.
The capital’s prosecutor’s office cordoned off the area as a crime scene, and for several hours judicial police officers documented the acts of violence.
34 people have been arrested by the police and 18 others have been put under investigation for the events that took place at the Democratic Party headquarters.
The organizers of this protest, which had mostly mobilized young people and teenagers in violent acts, did not express any distancing from the violence exercised against the PD headquarters, and even stated that they will protest again.
They left without leaving any door or window the headquarters of the Democratic Party, which they call the house of freedom and democracy, after hitting it with all the strong objects, iron-clad devices of various kinds.
US, European and OSCE diplomats condemned the violence and urged organizers to reduce protest tensions.
