In Albania, last week marked the largest increase in new cases of Covid since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
Official data processed by VOA show that in total, from January 4 until today, 9267 infected have been registered, almost three times the cases of the previous week. The daily average of the newly infected turns out to be more than 1300 cases, or 4 times higher than the daily average in December.
Over the past week the tests also set a record with a total of almost 45 thousand tampons. However, the positivity (ratio between new cases and tests) rose significantly, reaching levels of 20.6 percent, from 12.5 a week earlier, evidence of a strong deterioration in the situation. Positivity is an indicator of virus transmission in the community.
Monday was the day with the fewest cases, when the tests also dropped. According to the Ministry of Health in the last 24 hours 4996 tests have been performed, of which have resulted positive with COVID19, 793 citizens, in 41 of 61 municipalities across the country: 493 in Tirana, 37 in Gjirokastra, 36 in Durres, 31 in Vlora, 18 in Saranda, 16 in Lushnje, 14 in Kruja, out of 11 citizens in Gramsh, Kavaja, 10 in Kuçova, 9 in Kurbin, out of 8 citizens in Kamza, Dibër, 7 in Mallakastër, out of 6 citizens in Skrapar, Devoll, Delvinë, from 5 citizens in Shkodër, Lezhë, Himarë, Këlcyrë, from 4 citizens in Prrenjas, Peqin, Tepelena, Përmet, from 3 citizens in Patos, Divjakë, Pogradec, from 2 citizens in Berat, Korçë, Selenicë, Fier, Vora, Shijak, Has, Kukës, and by 1 citizen in Tropojë, Mirditë, Rrogozhinë, Kolonjë, Poliçan.
The situation in the hospitals had a slight deterioration and to date this afternoon 129 patients were hospitalized, 15 of whom were in serious condition. While in total, during the last 7 days, there were 19 victims, or two loss of life less than a week ago.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, over 3200 deaths have been registered in Albania, and over 220 thousand cases, of which, over 150 thousand, during the last year./VOA/
