On the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, the volcano of Mount Piton de la Furnes has erupted again, attracting dozens of amateurs of the fire spectacle.
“It replaces New Year’s fireworks,” said Marion, one of the visitors who came to see the blast on the east side of the island.
Reunion Island volcano is among the most active in the world along with those of Kīlaua on the islands of Hawaii, Stromboli and Etna in Italy, and Mount Erebus in Antarctica.
One of his longest eruptions was the one that started in August 2006 and ended in January 2007.
Its last eruption was in December 2020.
Pauline Suzeau, the island’s French doctor, said the blast was almost sudden.
“It’s a magical moment. “It’s been almost a year since there was an explosion and it looks like it’s a Christmas spectacle.”
“To me, the explosion seems soothing and exciting. “You can only see these things if you are here.”
“We see that visitors have come this year. “It’s a beautiful symbol of community for Christmas.”
