Violent protests in North Macedonia have become a concern for the rapporteur for Kosovo in the European Parliament, Viola Von Cramon.
The MEP fears that the unrest could spread to Montenegro and be used by Russia to destabilize the region. In a post on Twitter, Von Cramon blames the European Union on the grounds that the bloc failed to integrate the countries of the Western Balkans into the EU.
“When EU member states fail to provide a tangible reward for progressive governments in the Western Balkans, we have unrest in North Macedonia and potentially in Montenegro that can be exploited by Russia and other foreign actors. The time has come for the European Union to understand and speed up their actions.”Von Cramon said.
Violent protests in Skopje have continued for the fifth consecutive day against the French proposal for resolving disputes with Bulgaria. The protesters ask the government not to submit to the Bulgarian demands, which they suspect violates the Macedonian language and identity and paves the way for, as they say, the Bulgarianization of books and national heroes.
French President Emmanuel Macron tried to allay these concerns by asserting that Skopje’s red lines will be respected. “I’m not telling you that it’s a perfect deal, but just like any deal, it’s based on compromise and balance, and it will open your European way. It does not question the existence of the Macedonian language, which is an integral part of your identity”, guaranteed the head of Eliza, who expressed his conviction that in the end, Skopje’s decision will be for advancement on the path of European integration.
