Serbia wanted to abstain from voting on the suspension of Russia by the United Nations Human Rights Council, but due to pressure it was decided to vote in favor of the resolution, said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
The UN decided on Thursday, April 7, to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council due to reports of crimes in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
“Our decision has been to be restrained, and then come the innumerable, severe pressures that have nothing to do with the personal side. Nobody came to me and did not tell me, nor did they blackmail me, but they are blackmailing the country… They said ‘Do you know that today or tomorrow it will be decided whether we will be expelled [Serbia] from the sanctions package [e Bashkimit Evropian] for oil “said Vuçi135 in an interview with Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) on Thursday, April 7th.
As Vucic explained, Serbia is a militarily neutral country, but not politically.
“Serbia is on the European path. “We are a militarily neutral state, but we are not a politically neutral state, we are on the European path.”added Vuçiiç.
The President of Serbia said that the threat of sanctions and the ban on the European route is “suspended” over Serbia, due to Belgrade’s attitude towards Moscow.
“I like the West, I love Russia very much, but I love Serbia the most in the world,” said Vucic, noting that Serbia is the only country in Europe that has not imposed any restrictive measures on Russia due to the occupation of Ukraine.
The European Union has repeatedly called on Serbia to align its positions with those of the European bloc on sanctions against Moscow.
Although Serbia has not imposed sanctions on Russia, on March 2 it voted on a UN General Assembly resolution condemning the Russian occupation of Ukraine that began on February 24.
