Ukrainian forces are fighting for Mariupol and are not surrendering despite the ammunition being depleted, Ukrainian officials said, dismissing several previous reports that the city had fallen to the Russians.
“The battle is not over yet. The Russians have temporarily occupied part of the city. “Ukrainian soldiers continue to defend the central and southern parts of the city, as well as industrial areas and other parts,” Deputy Mayor Serhiy Orlov told the BBC.
Moscow has long focused on taking the port city, located between the pro-Russian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine and annexed Crimea in the south. Control of Mariupol has been a major objective of the Russian offensive, considered of the greatest strategic importance to it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says tens of thousands of people could have been killed there.
Ukraine’s war is already in its seventh week and the battles, it seems, will focus on the east and south of the country, where the fighting is expected to become more brutal. Official Kiev claims that unknown toxic substances were released in Mariupol, released by drones, which could be chemical weapons, claims that are opposed by Moscow, but are being verified by the United Kingdom.
