Sweden and Finland’s moves towards NATO have alerted the Kremlin, which has openly threatened the military alliance with serious consequences in the event of the two countries’ membership.
If Sweden and Finland join the military alliance, then Russia will have to strengthen its defenses and that there can be no more talk of a “nuclear-free” Baltic. “There is no longer any talk of a nuclear-weapon-free status for the Baltic – the balance needs to be restored,” said Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s deputy chairman of the Security Council. he would not take. “
Moscow’s sharp reaction came a day after Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said Helsinki would decide within weeks whether to apply for NATO membership.
Sanna Marin: I will not give clear timelines for when we will make our decision, but I think it will happen very soon. We will have these discussions within a few weeks, not months.
Swedish Marin’s Swedish counterpart, Magdalena Andersson, also warned of a major policy change for her country, saying Stockholm is also now seeking to join NATO.
Both countries have been cautious and for years have avoided taking such a step that would create great tensions with Russia, but the Ukraine war has raised very major concerns regarding the security situation.
