A tourist stranded in her car for hours in the snow in Pakistan said she “saw death with her eyes” as she waited for help.
Samina was one of thousands of citizens who rushed to see the snowfall in the town of Murree on top of the hill, but the storm had blocked roads in and out of the town.
About 1,000 vehicles were blocked and at least 22 people died, including two families.
Samina told the BBC she had left her home at 4pm local time to travel to Murree, but soon found herself trapped in the snow.
Photos and videos posted on social media showed the cars blocked, with snow piled up to their roofs.
“I could see death in front of me. I can not explain in words what I was going through. “We were praying that God would help us and not die in a snowstorm.” she said.
Samina was finally rescued at 10:00 the next morning, spending the night in one of the shelters set up in the resort town, which is located 2300 meters above sea level.
But among those who died were 10 children, emergency services said, as well as two families of five and eight members.
Authorities said eight people froze to death, while suffocation after inhaling fumes while trying to stay warm in their vehicles has been cited as a possible cause for others.
