Amid continuing tensions with Russia, the Biden administration is warning that more than 100,000 Russian troops along Ukraine’s border could launch an invasion at any moment.
Troops from the 82nd Division of the US Air Force land in Poland, a sign of support among NATO allies following a steady accumulation of Russian troops along the Ukrainian border.
“The United States’ contribution to Poland shows our solidarity with all our allies here in Europe, and obviously during this period of uncertainty, we know we are stronger together,” said General Chris Donahue of the 82nd Air Division.
According to the State Department, in addition to sending US troops to NATO allies in Eastern Europe, Washington has sent $ 650 million in military aid to Ukraine, the largest amount ever for that country. The Ukrainian government has so far minimized the possibility of a Russian invasion. But senior US officials think otherwise.
“We believe that there is a very clear possibility that Vladimir Putin will order an attack on Ukraine. It can take a variety of forms. It may happen as early as tomorrow, or it may take a few more weeks. “It’s put itself in a position with military deployments to be able to act aggressively against Ukraine at any moment right now.”
Jake Sullivan added that the United States is ready to continue diplomatic efforts if Russia chooses to reduce tensions. The crisis along Ukraine’s border is helping to create a rare moment of political unity in Washington, as members from both major parties condemn a possible invasion.
“The conditions are there. It is more likely to happen than not. The loop is gathering around Ukraine. These are dangerous times. Time is of the essence. “This would be the largest invasion of Europe since World War II. The time, as Jake Sullivan mentioned, is approaching,” said Republican lawmaker Michael McCaul.
Meanwhile, Ukrainians took to the streets on Saturday in a demonstration of force, vowing to “defend” their homeland.
In Chernobyl, just 10 kilometers from Belarus, the Ukrainian National Guard conducts direct fire drills.
Diplomatic efforts between NATO members and Russia have not yet yielded any results. A key obstacle is Russia’s request that Ukraine never be admitted to NATO, a non-negotiable request for the United States.
