Russia has accused Ukraine of carrying out an air strike on a fuel depot in the Russian city of Belgorod, an incident the Kremlin says could affect peace talks, but Kiev denies responsibility.
The Russian Defense Ministry claims that two Ukrainian helicopters hit the facility in Belgorod, about 35 km from the border with Ukraine, after entering Russia at an extremely low altitude around 5 am Moscow time.
The fire that broke out there forced the evacuation of some people, but later in the day the mayor of Belgorod, Anton Ivanov said that the fire services managed to bring the flames under control. “There is no threat to human life and health. “All residents can return to their homes.” he said in an online post.
Ukraine’s top security official has denied Russian allegations, the first by Moscow of an airstrike on Russian soil since it itself launched an invasion of the neighboring country on February 24. Belgorod is one of Russia’s main logistics centers for the war. ““They say we did it, but according to our information it does not correspond to reality.”said the Secretary of the Security Council, Oleksiy Danilov.
Earlier, Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Motuzyanyk said he would neither confirm nor deny Kiev’s role. ““Ukraine is currently conducting a defensive operation against Russian aggression on Ukrainian territory, but this does not mean that Ukraine is responsible for any catastrophe on Russian territory.”he said.
The White House said there was no comment on the Kremlin’s allegations that the fuel depot had been bombed by Ukraine.
