The one who put the bell on the tiger’s neck has a duty to remove it: this was one of the expressions used by Xi Jingping during the virtual meeting with US President Joe Biden, held at a time when everyone is wondering what role China has in the tragedy of Ukraine.
The Chinese president used an old proverb to show that, according to him, it is the United States and NATO that should discuss with Russia to resolve the crisis.
There was no promise from Beijing that it would mediate between the parties to the conflict, nor any statement condemning the actions of Vladimir Putin, whom US President Joe Biden described a few days ago as a war criminal. “We do not want to see this kind of crisis in Ukraine“, Was Xi’s comment.
China’s Foreign Ministry later released a transcript of the video conversation, condemning “conflict and confrontation” as “in no one’s interest”, without directly blaming Russia. In almost two hours of conversation, Biden has repeatedly said that “China must stand on the right side of history,” which means not helping the Russians in their brutal aggression unless there are consequences. severe, not only American but also world.
For days, the White House has been warning the Chinese not to give Putin a way out of economic sanctions, and not to accept his request for military equipment. President Biden made it clear to his Chinese counterpart the possible implications for Beijing of helping Moscow, but US officials declined to comment publicly on the consequences. Biden also criticized China’s provocative actions in the Taiwan Strait.
In the days after Putin introduced Russian forces into Ukraine, Mr. Xi’s government tried to distance itself from Russia’s offensive, but avoided criticism of Moscow. At other times, Beijing’s actions have been provocative and have included the strengthening of unverified Russian claims that Ukraine runs chemical and biological weapons laboratories with the support of the United States.
