The presidents of Poland and the Baltic states are visiting Kiev as they hold talks with their Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky. But their German counterpart will not join the meetings.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier canceled his plans to join the group after Ukraine made it clear he was ‘not welcome’. The plan, Steinmeier said during a trip to Warsaw, was “to undertake a trip to Kiev to send a strong signal of common European solidarity with Ukraine.”
“I was ready to do that, but apparently – and I have to keep that in mind – it was not welcome in Kiev.” he said.
The German newspaper Bild quoted Ukrainian sources as saying that the German president was denied a visit to Kiev “because of close ties with Russia in recent years.”
Last week, Steinmeier admitted he had erred about Russia, saying German policy toward Moscow had failed and that he had erred in trying to build bridges with Putin as well as supporting Nord Stream 2.
