A lion has been caught on camera killing the newborn cub of a zebra, moments after the desperate animal managed to get to its feet for the first time.
The brutal footage was captured by Mckenna Wentworth who was making a ‘safari’ tourist trip southwest of Kenya with her parents.
30-year-old from Minnesota, USA, recorded the event from just 30 meters away, when the lion was furiously released to his host by fatally biting him on the neck.
The picture shows the mother zebra standing in the middle of the field with her newborn cub, while in the background a herd of bison can be seen.
The little one is just starting to take some of his first steps when the lion immediately comes on stage and attacks the hopeless puppy.
He bites her fatally on the neck piercing her with his teeth about 10 cm long.
The newborn quickly loses consciousness and the lion pulls his catch, amid the cries of stunned spectators.
Referring to the event, Mckenna said: “I understand that this is the life cycle and everyone needs food, but the way the lion jumped and cut the neck of the little zebra was brutal.”
“We were shocked, I like animals very much, but I am also a vegetarian.”
“We saw from a distance that the zebra was giving birth and the tour guide approached us to see the event. He told us he believed the lions would leave the zebra alone because he had seen them mating and usually do not hunt after mating. But in fact the lion waited about half an hour and could not resist but immediately set off to eat the baby. It was very shocking. “That day they closed the walk there.”
Zebras have one of the longest gestation periods for mammals, at about 13 months, and females give birth to only one cub.
