One of Pakistan’s most famous preachers, politicians and presenters, Aamir Liaquat Hussain, has died at the age of 50 after being found unconscious at his home in Karachi.
Hussain had turned from an evangelical television preacher, into the PTI party politician of former ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan.
He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead at the scene. ‘Post mortem’ examinations are still being performed.
The deceased’s career had often encountered controversy ranging from giving babies to couples who could not give birth, to blocking the incitement program.
The personal life of the presenter who was not afraid of free speech, was often part of public debates.
The last time he married was for the third time, but 18-year-old wife Dania Shah filed for divorce last month with arguments such as domestic violence and drug use.
Hussain had worked for many media outlets in Pakistan and was adored by a large portion of the audience but was also the object of sharing with other sections of the public.
He was a skilled speaker and ‘showman’ who always guaranteed visibility for all the topics he covered.
He often mentioned in his programs the names of people whom he accused of blasphemy, betrayal, or immoral conduct.
In September 2008, he dedicated an entire program to the beliefs of Ahmadis, the disputed Muslim sect that followed the beliefs of the Qur’an but was considered heretical by traditional clerics.
In it, two scholars said that those who worshiped “false prophets were worthy of death.” Within 24 hours of the broadcast, a prominent member of the Ahmadi community was shot dead in the town of Mirpur Khas.
The speaker will also be remembered for comments against liberal women in Pakistan – often artists, authors or human rights activists.
Aamir Liaquat Hussain was a powerful figure who has dominated public consciousness in Pakistan for two decades.
The televangelist preacher was presenter, politician, actor and also stylist with his clothing line.
The news of his death spread like wildfire and has caused shock and ideas of various kinds. Consolations have come from the authorities and a flood of pain from the followers.
The presenter was an MP from 2002 to 2008, and Minister of Religious Affairs from 2004 to 2007 with former President Pervez Musharraf.
