Prime Minister Edi Rama’s harsh rhetoric in Brussels on Thursday met with strong opposition from the Bulgarian government.
It is the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which through a reaction initially remembers that “Bulgaria has always been among the EU member states that has supported the European identity of the Albanian people”.
“This issue of Bulgaria is a disgrace,” he said.
The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry says: “This is not the first time we have heard serious insults from the head of government. “Such statements through a low language should not be constantly justified as they do not contain the ethics of European communication.”
We, following the statement, expect from the Prime Minister of Albania to consider the way of language expressed, as a policy of an EU candidate country.
The flogging attitude towards Rama does not end there.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives the head of the Albanian government a lecture on how to express himself.
“In these conditions, more than anything else, it matters and we insist on this, on the control it should have in the tone of communication. We have a common future with the future with Albania. Politicians may one day leave. The nations remain there. Our people have common interests and should not get into the whirlpool of ill-reasoning by politicians.
And at the end of the Bulgarian statement it is stated that “it is unacceptable that the relations between the two countries are held hostage, by the extraordinary attitudes of the current Albanian Prime Minister”.
Statement of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry
Bulgaria has always been among those EU member states that support the European identity of the Albanian people. We stood up for Albania’s European perspective and the start of EU membership negotiations when it was much more difficult than today. Over the years, there have not been many other voices with us in this cause. We still stand for it today, despite everything, for the sake of a common European future.
In response, not for the first time, we have heard serious unchallenged, insulting qualifications from a head of government. Even jumps into such a low language register can no longer be justified by character traits and lack of European communication skills. We expect the Albanian Prime Minister to consider his means of expression in a language that suits a politician from a candidate country for EU membership.
At this level, more than anything else, we insist on maintaining a good tone of communication. At this level, we have always demonstrated all the respect required by responsible positions and the level of interstate relations. We have a common future ahead with Albania. Politicians are fleeing. The nations are standing. Our peoples have a common interest that should not be hindered by the bad judgment of a politician. It is unacceptable for relations between the countries to be held hostage to the eccentricity of the current Albanian Prime Minister.
