High emigration and declining fertility are rapidly shrinking the young population and consequently reducing the number of students in schools.
According to INSTAT data, in the school year 2021-2022, 577,869 pupils and students were enrolled in official education, with a decrease of 2.0%, compared to the school year 2020-21. Secondary education decrease by 4.2% in the number of students
In the school year 2021-22, 103,467 students were enrolled in secondary education, marking a decrease of 4.2%, compared to the previous school year. In 2021-22, the largest share of students enrolled in secondary education are students of high school and socio-cultural secondary education of 82.3%. This proportion has remained almost at the same level over the last three years. The majority of students enrolled in secondary education attend education in public educational institutions (86.6%).
In the school year 2021-22, the number of teachers in 9-year education is 24,400, of which 76.7% are women. The student ratio for a teacher in public primary education is 16.1 and in the private one it is 14.6. While in the higher cycle of 9-year education, the student ratio for a teacher in public is 8.5 and in the private one 7.3. The number of teachers in secondary education is 8,658 of which 69.2% are women. The student ratio for a teacher in secondary education is 12.8 in public education and 8.3 in private education.
Number of students increases by 1%
In the academic year 2021-22, 123,880 students continue their studies in all higher education programs, marking an increase of 0.1% compared to 2020-21. Students participating in public higher education make up 76.3% of the total number of students. In all higher education programs, in the academic year 2021-22, 73,493 female students participate, or 59.3% of the total number of students in higher education. In the bachelor programs, for the same period, 72,852 students participated in higher education, marking a decrease of 2.1% compared to 2020-21. In the academic year 2021-22, as well as last academic year, students seem to prefer the field of study “Business, Administration and Law”, where a quarter of the total number of students is concentrated. While the least preferred field is “Agriculture, forestry, fishing and veterinary” where only 2.2% of the total number of students are enrolled.
Growing interest in studies in engineering and medicine
Analyzed for each field of study, compared to the previous academic year, there is a decrease in the number of students attending higher education in the fields of “Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Veterinary” by 19.9% and “Arts and Humanities” by 13, 1%.
