The suspected driver of an abandoned truck in Texas, with dozens of dead bodies inside, has been charged with smuggling migrants, which has led to his death.
Homero Zamorano posed as a migrant in a bush near a truck in San Antonio, Texas, when he was arrested by police.
So far 53 people have died, some from heat and dehydration, as they were trapped inside the truck in high temperature and without water.
This case is the deadliest human trafficking in American history.
According to a Mexican migration official, the suspected driver, Zamorano – who is from Texas – “attempted to present himself as one of the survivors” when he was found by police.
The second suspect, Christian Martinez, has been arrested on charges of conspiracy.
Federal prosecutors have said investigators found his name when they searched Zamorano’s phone, and found that the two had communicated.
The US Department of Justice has announced that both men could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.
Two other suspects have also been arrested by authorities.
Emergency crews arrived Monday night near San Antonio, where they found 46 dead bodies inside the abandoned truck.
The death toll has since risen to 53, as a number of hospitalized people have died during treatment.
According to the Mexican government, 27 of them were from Mexico, 14 others from Honduras, seven from Guatemala and two from El Salvador. Radio Free Europe
