Israel has begun trials of a fourth dose of the covid-19 vaccine for healthy patients, while it appears it will use the additional booster drug for the rest of the population at risk. Sheba Medical Center said it is the first time in the world that healthy citizens are receiving a fourth vaccine of the covid-19 vaccine.
About 150 health workers whose antibody levels have dropped are part of the trial at Sheba Medical Center outside Tel Aviv.
On December 21, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett welcomed a decision by a panel of experts to recommend the supplement booster for people over 60, healthcare workers and people with weakened immune systems. But the director general of the health ministry has not yet signed it.
“Great news, do not waste time, go get vaccinated”, said Bennett in a statement at the time.
Those taking the fourth dose will be administered provided at least four months have passed since the third dose, the government said in the statement.
“The state of Israel continues to be at the forefront of global efforts to tackle the pandemic. “The people of Israel were the first in the world to receive the third dose of the covid-19 vaccine, and we continue to pioneer with the fourth dose.”, added Bennett.
Initial results from the study are expected to come out by the end of the week, at which time the growing burden of covid-19 cases in Israel is likely to be even heavier.
““I do not think it’s right now, but it could change in a week.” told CNN Dr. Gili-Regev Yochay, director of the Infection Prevention Control Unit at Sheba Medical Center. “It depends on what we see happening in England, and also here – if we see that there is a more serious illness, it will probably be correct. That’s why it’s so important to start a search as soon as possible. ”
