In an extraordinary meeting, the Macedonian government considered a French proposal aimed at breaking the deadlock with Bulgaria and lifting its veto that is holding up the start of EU membership negotiations.
The executive of the neighboring state decided to pass the negotiation framework to the parliament for discussion, where the conclusions related to the EU documents will be approved.
The largest Macedonian opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, maintains its position that the French proposal is detrimental to the interests of North Macedonia as a state and its citizens, as it puts the Macedonian identity and language at risk.
Its representative, Dragan Kovacki, stated earlier that the French proposal represents an ultimatum to all the demands of the Bulgarian side.
“The government should listen to the voice of the people and not decide against their will. Through the protests, the people said that they will not accept the ultimatum. Kovacevski and the Government must now show whether they are with their people or against them.” said the opposition politician.
For days, Skopje has become the scene of violent protests against this proposal, which demonstrators say endangers the Macedonian language and identity.
Tensions are high, and Macedonian police recently prevented a major incident during the protests.
A man was arrested after he fired several shots, shots that opposition leader Hristian Mickovski, who was taking part in the protest, claimed were aimed at him.
In front of the “Skënderbeu” square, anti-Albanian calls were heard again as the protesters clashed with the police.
This is where the incident began with the throwing of stones at objects and cars near the square where there is also a hotel, the owner, the person who shot the gun and was then handcuffed by the officers. Mickovski spoke of a classic political montage.
“This was supposed to look like an inter-ethnic conflict. I received informal information about my elimination from the authorities. We saw people with guns, there were also shots, the police ran away. I have a message for Albanians: We must build the future together as we have built it for centuries. A message to the Macedonians, to stay dignified and fight”. he declared.
