Abazovic says he will not resign after losing support in Parliament

The vice-president of the DPS, Jevto Erakovic, said that they had supported a minority government, so that Montenegro is headed towards the European Union, but added that “this is not that road, but a precipice”, so he called on Abazovic to resign.

“I will not resign until the parliament decides”, replied Abazovic.

The reason for the lack of support is the Government’s decision to approve the text of the Basic Agreement, which provides for the regulation of relations between Montenegro and the Belgrade-based Serbian Orthodox Church, something that these parties oppose.

Although the Government approved this document on July 8, after Abazovic’s discussions with the state president, Milo Djukanovic, agreement was reached on July 19 that before signing, experts’ opinions should be consulted and the legal basis checked.

The agreement has prompted the opposition Democratic Front party – which supports the signing of the agreement – to also demand Abazovic’s resignation.

The Montenegrin government approved the Basic Agreement only ten days after Abazovic’s meeting with Patriarch Porfirije in Serbia, who emphasized that “full agreement has been reached with the Government on the text of the Basic Agreement”.

Abazovic – whose government is supported by Western partners, the European Union and the United States of America – has not received clear support from Brussels and Washington for the approval of the Framework Agreement.

On July 11, the Center for Civic Education presented a public opinion survey, which revealed that only 11 percent of citizens were interested in signing the Basic Agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The government of Dritan Abazović was elected on April 28 of this year with the votes of DPS, URA, SDP, the pro-Serbian Socialist People’s Party and the parties of the minority peoples.
