Albania-England, 100 years of relationship! Ambassador Smith recalls historic moments

“I am very proud that during the Second World War the United Kingdom played a very important role in helping to liberate Albania from Italian and German occupation. “This is very important.”

However, the ambassador did not leave without mentioning that immigration and crime have become an important problem and a challenge to be faced.

“I am just happy to be here. I will be for the next four years as well. Your government but also our government are determined to make this relationship more important than it has been so far. The main challenge is immigration crime. “Although outside the European Union, the United Kingdom needs its best friends. Friends who share democratic values, economic values and of course Albania is one of them.” – said Smith.

Organized crime and immigration and corruption are the reasons that according to Alastair King-Smith are not leaving Albania to have a rapid improvement. Commitment to dealing with them would further strengthen relations between the two countries.

“I think the level of cooperation you will see between the UK and Albania will increase. Albania has a bright future. But it will be better if you cope with the challenges. Corruption, immigration crime. “If you can handle this, instead of a slow improvement, you will have a significant improvement,” said Alastair King-Smith.

Diplomatic relations between Albania and Great Britain were established on November 9, 1921. The British government also recognized the Albanian government after November 29, 1944, but the British mission left in April 1946 due to the restrictions imposed by the Albanian government of the time. regarding the movement of members of this mission. The Corfu Canal incident, in May 1946, also marks the final severance of these relations.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored on May 29, 1991 through a joint communiqué of both parties.
