In some wonderful wildlife views published recently, scary jungle predators are seen resisting a game of “psychological pressure” with rhinos on a dirt road in the woods.
The rare episode was recorded by visitors Mark and Jill Fox on the outskirts of Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The video first shows the herd of lions relaxing on the shady road, a few feet away from the rhinos.
But as one of the latter separates from the herd, a young lion attacks him, before the rhino returns from the feline standing menacingly ready for confrontation.
Frightened by the large rhino mass and his terrifying horn over his nose, the lion retreats before attempting another time undecided, and without success.
Park ranger Mark said encounters with these two species do not happen often: “No money usually happens that way. “In the six years we’ve been in Kruger Park, we’ve seen lion / rhino confrontation maybe only twice.”
But Mark adds that the issue was more of a test of strength and intimidation than an attempt to kill a rhino.
“If you watch the video, the young lions approach the rhino, before the older lion arrives, which seems to command them not to get too involved with it.”
Mark adds that the rhino population is most at risk, mainly from illegal hunting so Kruger Park has stepped up efforts to remove animal horns to discourage their illegal killing.
