Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro arrived in Russia today to meet with his counterpart Vladimir Putin amid tensions with the West.
Brazil yesterday confirmed diplomatic ties with Kiev in a phone call between the two foreign ministries, the government announced shortly before Bolsonaro’s departure for Russia.
The minister had reiterated the country’s support for a peaceful solution, saying Brazil and Ukraine had just celebrated the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
Bolsonaro rejected U.S. pressure by personally going to the meeting with Putin, whom he said was about ‘bilateral trade ties’.
“Brazil is one of the largest agricultural producers and exporters in the world, but we are very dependent on Russian fertilizers,” Bolsonaro said, justifying the trip.
On Thursday, he will visit Hungary, led by his right-wing counterpart, Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Western analysts say the timing of Bolsonaro’s visit to Moscow was “the worst possible.”
