EU leaders warned Russia that an attack on Ukraine would have far-reaching consequences and costly costs for the country.
The statement came amid concerns about the gathering of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border.
The message was conveyed at the last European Council summit this year in Brussels, where possible restrictive measures against Russia were mentioned, but no details were released, says the BBC.
The European bloc, however, encouraged, on the other hand, to step up diplomatic efforts with Moscow.
“Any further military aggression against Ukraine will have serious consequences and heavy costs in response, including restrictive measures coordinated with partners,” the EU leaders said in a statement, referring to the United States and Britain.
After the summit, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU is now ready to impose additional sanctions on Russia.
It is not yet known what measures have been discussed, but it is thought that one of them may be related to the new pipeline, “Nord Stream 2”, which connects Russia with Germany, but which has not yet been put into operation.
European leaders voiced support for the return of the quadripartite dialogue between Paris, Berlin, Moscow and Kiev, known as the Normandy format.
