Italy is ready to elect a new president and aims to promote unity, following political squabbles.
Silvio Berlusconi thinks he is suitable for the position.
The media mogul, billionaire and three-time Prime Minister of Italy, who entered politics almost 30 years ago, is aiming to add to his career even the highest position in this country.
Berlusconi was convicted of tax fraud and ousted by the Senate. But as for his moral example, the 85-year-old, who had been seen many times on different evenings with younger girls, had declared that “I am not a saint.”
The current head of state, Sergio Mattarella, whose term expires on February 3, has repeatedly said he does not want to run for president again.
Berlusconi also managed to be acquitted of charges of allegedly having sex with a minor girl.
He has been lobbying for several weeks to center-right Italian lawmakers to secure their votes to be elected president on January 24, for a four-year term.
In Italy, deputies, senators and representatives of 20 regions elect the president of the republic.
To win, a candidate needs two-thirds of the vote in the first three rounds of voting. In the fourth, a simple majority is sufficient.
Former Prime Minister Enrico Letta, who heads the Democratic Party, criticized the center-right decision to back Berlusconi, calling it “a profoundly wrong choice”.
“Every (party) political leader is divisive, but when we think of Silvio Berluckon, in the history of these 25 years, it is difficult to think of a political leader more divisive than him,” Letta said.
Berlusconi has struggled over the years with heart and other health problems. He was also hospitalized as a result of COVID-19.
