EU Secretary of State Josep Borrell had telephone conversations today with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau, who chairs the OSCE, on the situation in Ukraine. .
“The deployment of Russian forces along the border with Ukraine was discussed, as well as the ongoing bilateral and international diplomatic efforts in connection with Moscow’s efforts to redefine security agreements in Europe,” the EU statement said.
During the talks, the need to maintain the basic principles of the “existing European security architecture within the OSCE” was reconfirmed. The foreign ministers of the EU member states at their meeting in Brest last week agreed to further strengthen co-ordination with the US and NATO, as well as to boost EU co-operation within the OSCE by asked Borrell to coordinate these activities.
Today’s quadripartite talks took place after these recent discussions and exchanges between partners, including with Ukrainian counterparts, and before the US talks with Russia, the EU reports. EU foreign ministers will discuss the issue in Brussels on Monday, where Borrell invited Secretary Blinken to join the meeting.
