Russia’s attack on Ukraine on Thursday was considered one of the “darkest hours for Europe” in nearly 80 years, according to European Union foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell.
“These are the darkest hours for Europe since the end of World War II,” EU High Representative Josep Borrell told reporters.
Borrell promised “urgent assistance to Ukraine”, as well as support for evacuation efforts, including from EU staff.
EU sanctions: Speaking with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Borrell said sanctions from the 27-member bloc against Russia would be “the toughest package of sanctions ever implemented” ”.
Von der Leyen said he would introduce “massive and strategic” sanctions against Russia for approval later today.
