Bosnia and Herzegovina has registered the first ten cases with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, health officials said. They added that the number of infections with this variant, which is more contagious, may be higher.
Goran Cerkez, an adviser to the Ministry of Health in the Bosniak and Croat Federation of Bosnia, said the cases were detected after tests carried out by the Sarajevo University Clinical Center.
“We have no doubt that Omicroni has already been circulating in Bosnia and that in the coming months he will become the dominant variant,” Cerkez told Reuters.
Bosnia does not have a national Ministry of Health, but 13 regional governments have respective ministries, which have their own pandemic statistics.
According to official figures, only about 30 per cent of Bosnia’s population has been vaccinated against the coronavirus. However, according to Cerkez, this number may be higher, as according to him, the statistics do not take into account the large departure of citizens from Bosnia in recent years.
