The so-called “Freedom Caravan” of Canadian anti-vaccine truckers and their supporters was approaching the capital Orrawa today.
The move, launched a few days ago, comes in response to a government request for mandatory vaccination of truck drivers crossing the border with the US and Canada.
As of January 15, Canada had required essential utility workers who had previously been excluded to be vaccinated.
The US has also placed similar demands on its border side since January 22nd.
Reports say the group already reaches several thousand and is on its way to the capital Ottawa where they are expected to seek an end to compulsory vaccination and COVID-19 restrictions. The group’s leaders have called for a peaceful protest, but the media has repeatedly sounded the alarm about acts of violence by groups that have threatened in the past.
Ottawa police said they are working with security agencies to identify potential threats.
The first few hundred vehicles of the protest began to enter the capital today and tomorrow are expected to be placed in the central square of Parliament Hill. It is not known how long the truckers will stay there to block the city.
The area outside the country’s parliament building has meanwhile begun to fill with movement supporters with the Canadian flag and others with cars blowing trumpets.
In interviews with the Washington Post, activist Jay Koster said he had come from Fergus, Ontario, to protest after being “disappointed” with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the “liberal” government over forced vaccination. .
“Even people who choose not to be vaccinated are Canadians. “We are Canadians and we like freedom,” he said.
The Canadian government ended the exemption of truckers from vaccination by asking them to be vaccinated if they want to avoid two-week quarantine and testing when entering the country.
