An off-duty police officer was killed and robbed as several cars were set on fire in the last 24 hours by the Colombian Gulf drug cartel, as reported in response to the extradition of their boss Dairo Antonio ‘Otoniel’ ugsuga this week to the US.
Police officer Edison Acevedo, of the municipality of Caracolí in the northwest of the country, was attacked last night after completing his duty with the patrol car, writes the local network.
The media wrote that Acevedo had been warned of the dangers that remained in the region after the Gulf Clan cartel had announced four-day ‘national attacks’ to destabilize Antioquia and the neighboring departments of Bolívar, Sucre and Córdoba.
One of the cartel retaliatory attacks recorded on camera showed the moment when an individual in the back seat of the motorcycle opened fire in the middle of the road in the northern area of Córdoba leaving a young man dead.
Meanwhile, the cartel has been recruiting new members, including unemployed young people, who through social media are charged with acts of vandalism such as burning trucks, buses and cars.
Army General Juvenal Díaz said 19 of them were arrested this week.
About 50 vehicles were burned this week in 30 Antioquia municipalities and neighboring departments, where the ugsuga cartel continues to maintain a strong presence.
Defense Minister Diego Molano told reporters yesterday that the government was activating new anti-organized crime troops, including an elite unit known as the ‘Search Bloc’ to track down high-ranking cartels and crime executors.
Although no incidents were reported in the troubled city of Medellín, Mayor Daniel Quintero said he had deployed additional police forces to prevent crime.
The head of the Gulf cartel, ugsuga, arrived in New York on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and running a criminal organization.
