The last variant of Omicron, BA.5, is considered the cause of the increase in infections in Europe and the USA.
For most of the pandemic, the only relief was that if you got Covid 19, you wouldn’t get infected again for a period of time.
But more and more now, there are increasing cases showing that re-infection can happen several times and even quickly, and this is due to the subvariant that is slowly turning into the dominant strain.
“The virus is circulating freely and countries are not efficiently managing the burden of the disease in their capacities in terms of hospitalization of acute cases and the large number of people with problems left by the disease, which is otherwise known as the long Covid. BA.5 is behind 52% of the cases registered at the end of June“, said Tedros Ghebreyesus, head of the WHO.
In the United States, it is estimated that BA5 is causing about 65% of infections. It is the sister variant of the Omicron strain, which has been prevalent worldwide since late 2021 and has caused increased infection rates in parts of Europe, Australia and South Africa, where it was first found.
WHO data shows that the number of coronavirus cases in the world has been increasing for four consecutive weeks. Like its sister variant, BA.4, BA.5 also manages to avoid immune protection, provided or by vaccination , or from previous infection.
For this reason, the BA.5 has a growing advantage over other Omicron subvariants that are circulating. For many people, this means reinfection, in many cases even after a short time.
The rising number of cases has led to more hospitalizations in some countries, but the number of deaths has not increased dramatically. Scientists are now also drawing attention to the BA.2.75 variant – first identified in India – which has a large number of mutations and is spreading rapidly.
