Denmark expects to rent 300 prison cells in Kosovo.
The agreement reached in principle was announced by the Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, who explained that the Danish government project aims to alleviate prison overcrowding, which has increased by 19 percent since 2015.
She said the number of prisoners in Denmark had reached more than 4,000 earlier this year.
Haxhiu said the agreement is profitable for Kosovo.
Danish Minister of Justice Nick Haekkerup is quoted by the Danish media as saying that “it has been agreed to rent 300 prison cells in Kosovo and to expand the capacity of prisons in Denmark by several hundred places”.
Haxhiu said that the issue was negotiated by the previous governments and that it is about the prison of the city of Gjilan.
The deal has not been signed yet and must be approved by the Kosovo parliament, as it is an international agreement.
