Killer whales living in separate sections of Seaworld Water Park suffer “extreme stress that leads to violent behavior and deadly attacks,” said former park trainer John Hargrove recently.
The former orca trainer turned animal protection activist is already campaigning for their release from several amusement water parks in Orlando, Florida.
SeaWorld Parks announced in 2016 that they would no longer breed aquatic animals but would retain existing ones to “continue to share their experiences with visitors until the event closes later.”
John Hargrove has joined the effort to stop solitaire orchard closures and improve living conditions in water parks, 10 years after giving up their training at SeaWorld Park.
He tells of their suffering in a rude documentary in 2013 called ‘Blackfish’.
The 49-year-old says: “The physical and psychological damage that prisoners suffer in solitary confinement has been documented for a long time. Like them, orcs in parks like SeaWorld suffer the same fate.
“From my 14 years of experience I can tell you that I have witnessed how orcs, definites or other marine mammals suffer the same physical and psychological trauma.”
John adds: “Imagine spending your whole life in a closed separation,” adding that the Tilikum orca, which killed his colleague Dawn Brancheau in 2002, was not to blame.
“She was not the only orca in SeaWorld Park to kill her trainer. We have had numerous wounds and almost murders during my career, from various orcs.
“Closed living causes not only chronic health issues but extreme stress that leads to violent behavior and deadly attacks.”
According to John, more than 40 orcs and 300 dolphins and whales have died in SeaWorld Park.
The former coach says the causes of their deaths range from pneumonia, infections, traumatic wounds, encephalitis, heart attack, intestinal gangrene or other illnesses caused by the life of isolation.
He adds that stressed creatures break their teeth on the concrete sides of the partitions where they live or in the wire mesh.
Many people have called for a boycott of holiday packages, including visits to such parks.
Such was the story of orca trainer Dawn Brancheau who was shattered by Tilikumorca 5.4 tons, 7 meters long.
The 41-year-old was caught by the whale and massacred in the water during the show, so fast that no one spotted what happened.
