Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine has overturned assumptions about the inviolability of borders and put the world in a whole new situation, say German security experts.
According to them, the invasion of Russia not only threatens the sovereignty of Ukraine, but has undermined the entire geopolitical order. “Today almost everything is different, compared to yesterday,” political scientist Johannes Varwick of Halle University told DW.
“Now we are back to a kind of confrontation of the blocs. Only that the borders of the Western Bloc have shifted to the East, compared to the Cold War period. Peace in Europe is a thing of the past and trust in Russia has been completely destroyed. “It will take decades to restore trust between the West and Russia.”
President Putin’s decision to send troops across the border of a sovereign nation – the largest invasion of its kind since World War II – has set what many see as a terrible precedent. Rafael Loss, security policy specialist for the Council of Europe (ECFR), told DW that in the current crisis, the long-term consequences are still difficult to assess. “For at least some parts of Europe, the 1990s seem to be in ruins.
“Especially for countries that are between, unfortunately, countries that are no longer part of NATO or the European Union.” This means, according to him, that European countries will once again become, as in the Cold War, increasingly dependent on the United States to guarantee protection, and the borders under the sphere of Russian influence will be militarized.
