Earthquake race / Local elections in Durrës! Parties want power, people want reconstruction

From 1990 until now, the Democratic Party has governed the local government in Durrës for two terms. Since 2001, all mayors have been left-wing.

Socialist Valbona Sako, winner of the 2019 elections where the opposition did not participate, on December 1, 2019, just a few days after the earthquake that destroyed entire neighborhoods of the city resigned and then was commanded by one of the vice presidents, Zhyljen Varfaj. Varfaj also officially resigned in April 2020 for health reasons.

That same month, the city council handed over the task to architect Emiriana Sako, who had to manage the entire post-earthquake reconstruction situation, certainly with strong government support. On Thursday, 9 new buildings were inaugurated for 230 families in Manez. Mayor Sako was accompanied by the number two of the government, who announced that 236 individual apartments would soon be finished in Manez.

Although the city has recovered from the severe earthquake, the citizens of Durrës still think that the main problem of the city is the reconstruction:

“As soon as the reconstruction is completed.”

“I want to move into my new home as soon as possible.”

“More trees and recreation areas inside the city.”

“Garbage cleaning”.

The electoral offer of the right for Durrës are two well-known entrepreneurs. Lulzim Basha believes that he can restrain the 21-year-old socialist government with the entrepreneur Luan Hoti, whom we detach for a few moments from the campaign and prepare for the end of the campaign on Friday.

“I have a plan, a plan on the ground to make this city more livable, greener and cleaner and every decision after talking to the citizens. “I will not be an office mayor but a mayor of roads and any work administered by the municipality”, says Hoti.

A few meters away from the statue of Mujo Uliqinaku, the electoral headquarters of the House of Freedom has been set up, which is trying to resist both the official line of Lulzim Basha and the government. The candidate of the House of Freedom, Ardian Muka, another entrepreneur, led the electoral campaign with the motto “Hope and Change for Durrës”.

“In 15 months we have the general local plan, in 15 months we complete all the procedures related to the reconstruction”, says Muka.

The SP candidate is supported by Dako a first film in the last 15 years. The other candidate, Mr. Hoti, has lost his way and is traveling in the dark.

The socialist candidate says that in addition to extinguishing all the wounds of the earthquake, her plans go even further:

“Together with the government we have opened a new chapter for the city of Durrës with major projects. “Tourist marina, new cargo port, rehabilitation and full opening of the amphitheater, urban infrastructure to help tourism as the main asset and the main pillar of the economy in our city.”
