Crete wakes up again from strong tremors. A magnitude 5.7 earthquake was recorded at 07:08 this Wednesday.
Professor of Geology and Natural Disaster Management, Efthymios Lekkas, has stated that the earthquake on the Greek island occurred in a sensitive area, in the underwater area with a considerable depth of 40 km.
“It is in the arch of the Greek plate, but it seems that it has nothing to do with the earthquake that hit last September with a magnitude 6 Richter in the village of Arkalohori, which caused a loss of life and extensive material damage. The quake struck after four months of seismic activity in the area.
“What I can say is that we are concerned about the general stimulation of this whole area in the southern part of the country, in Crete and the surrounding area due to successive tremors.”
Meanwhile last Sunday, with a difference of almost two hours, two earthquakes of magnitude 5.2 and 5.4 were recorded in the sea area between the island of Crete and that of Kasos.
At about the same time, a 4-magnitude tremor was recorded in Corinth.
Last night, two minutes before midnight, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake shook Thessaloniki, reports journalist Aleksandër Marku.
The quake, according to the Geodynamic Institute, had its epicenter 15 km east of Thessaloniki, while its depth was only 5 km and as a result tremors were felt in all areas of the northern city of Greece, causing panic among residents.
