Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Kiev where he was received with high state honors by his counterpart Volodymyr Zelenski, who in these difficult moments, undoubtedly appreciates the support of Ankara.
Erdogan’s visit comes in the wake of the Turkish head of state’s efforts to mediate the crisis created between Ukraine and Russia, which has amassed 100,000 troops on the border with the neighboring country.
Erdogan’s diplomatic effort comes at a time when Moscow has accused the United States of “throwing gasoline on the fire” and escalating tensions by sending 1,000 troops to Romania and 2,000 more to Poland to strengthen NATO’s eastern flanks.
Turkey maintains good relations with both Kiev and Moscow, and Erdogan has offered to talk to both sides in time to escalate the situation.
But as a NATO member, what the Turkish president said earlier, in the event of a conflict, will be on the side of the North Atlantic alliance.
As Erdogan landed in Kiev, the Russian Defense Ministry released footage of Russian S400 anti-aircraft systems arriving in Belarus.
The actions we are seeing lately, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, referring to the movement of American troops, show that the aim is not to reduce tensions, on the contrary, it is moving towards their aggravation.
Peskov reiterated the idea that Russia’s concerns about NATO expansion to the east are absolutely justified, and that any action taken by Moscow to protect its own security and interests is what logic dictates.
