Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday, July 11, called on his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to extend border crossing authorization for humanitarian shipments into Syria.
This request by Erdogan comes as diplomats are trying to find a solution that could avoid the Russian veto and allow humanitarian aid to continue to be sent to Syria.
“Erdogan emphasized that he attaches great importance to the expansion of mechanization for crossing the border in Syria,” his office said in a statement after the phone conversation between the leaders.
This conversation comes after the mechanism that allows humanitarian aid to be sent to war-torn Syria expired on Sunday.
The border between Turkey and Syria, namely the Baba al-Hawa border crossing is the only way for the United Nations to send aid to civilians, without passing through territories controlled by Syrian Government forces.
Russia, an ally of the regime in Syria, has used its veto in the UN Security Council to oppose Western proposals to keep this border crossing open for another year.
The disagreements over the issue come at a time when diplomatic tensions are high over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In the past, the Security Council has extended the mechanization of crossing the border and there is still hope that a vote on this could happen this week.
